Enrollment Now Open
(WESLACO, TX) October 31, 2023 – According to the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the 2021 truck driver shortage was estimated to hit 80,000, an all time high, and projects that if current trends continue the industry could need over 160,000 drivers by 2030. Since truck driving is in such high demand now and for the foreseeable future, South Texas Vocational Technical Institute (STVT) in Weslaco, part of Ancora Education’s network of private postsecondary schools and a quality workforce education provider, announced the launch of a Commercial Driver’s Licence (CDL) program that prepares students for a career in commercial driving and transportation.
“CDL training is a popular program on our sister campuses across the state and we are thrilled to be able to offer it to our community in Weslaco,” said Omar Trevino, STVT-Weslaco’s Executive Director. “In Texas, the driver shortage is pronounced and the addition of the Weslaco CDL program ensures students have the skills and knowledge to not only earn their CDL, but embark on a career path with opportunities for growth.”
With an emphasis on hands-on learning and road safety, STVT’s CDL Training: Class A Tractor Trailer program requires 160 hours and can be completed in as little as four weeks. Enrollment is on a rolling basis with programs beginning every four to eight weeks. Visit stvt.edu for more details.
“STVT-Weslaco is in the business of educating and training students so they are qualified for jobs and careers in their chosen professions,” said Scott Murphy, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Admissions for Ancora, parent company of STVT. “There is a demand for truck drivers that is not anticipated to slow for years, so it is a no-brainer to add CDL training to the course catalog and offer students an opportunity to learn about the industry and obtain the skills to earn a CDL.”
Along with classroom education, students in the CDL training program at STVT will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on training to strengthen their skills in:
- Defensive Driving
- General Maintenance Procedures
- Accident Prevention
- Relevant Safety Regulations
