What Does an Automotive Service Technician Do?
Auto service techs inspect, repair, and maintain the electrical and mechanical systems in cars and light trucks. They use diagnostic equipment to assess the performance of different systems, order car parts if necessary, and perform the appropriate repairs. Although specific responsibilities can vary based on the workplace, some common tasks auto service techs perform include, but aren’t limited to:
- using diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and inspect vehicles
- checking sensors
- refilling steering fluid
- changing air filters
- replacing worn out brake pads and rotors
- balancing tires
- repairing transmissions
- performing oil changes and more
If they find any damage or malfunctions during their inspection, they make a note of their findings in their company’s computer system. Through this system they can order replacement parts, check inventory, calculate the repair costs, and more. Once they have the right parts, they can install and test them to ensure they’re safe for use.
How Do You Become an Automotive Service Technician?
Auto service techs typically complete an Automotive Service Technician program at a postsecondary institute. These programs teach students the skills used by entry-level service technicians through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on education. They allow students to practice in simulated labs, see their skills in action, ask questions as they arise, and gain confidence in their new abilities.
As students practice troubleshooting and repairing different systems, they may grow more comfortable handling common problems and communicating with others. They may also develop a keen eye for detail and improve their customer service skills.

How Long Does it Take to Become an Auto Service Tech?
How long it takes to become an auto service tech depends on program length and whether or not someone takes the program as a full-time student. Most Automotive Service Tech programs can be completed in six months to two years, but this may take longer if a student enrolls on a part-time basis.
While some Automotive Service Technician programs may award graduates an associate’s degree, most award either a diploma or certificate. The length of the Automotive Service Technician program can vary depending on the award type.
After completing their program, graduates may choose to take an EPA Section 609 certification exam and an ASE test. Having an EPA 609 certification allows auto service techs to handle refrigerants in the field. Without this certification, auto service techs may be unable to repair air conditioning systems in cars and light trucks.
Do You Need to Be Certified to Work as an Auto Service Tech?
Generally speaking, earning an ASE certification isn’t required to become an auto service tech in Texas. However, having an ASE certification can demonstrate a technician’s expertise and proficiency in their craft. Earning an EPA Section 609 certification allows them to properly handle, recycle, and dispose of refrigerants when repairing motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems.
To qualify for ASE certification, potential examinees can either:
- graduate from an Automotive Service Technician program lasting at least one year or
- gain at least two years of work experience
Having EPA and ASE certification can make an auto service tech more appealing to potential employees and help expand employment opportunities.
Is There a Demand for Automotive Service Technicians?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook for auto service techs is predicted to remain steady from 2022 to 2032. If these projections continue to hold, around 67,700 openings will be available each year. Additionally, Texas employs the most auto service techs in the US.
